Second round of the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship starts in January 2025

Cologne, 19 December 2024 - Following its successful launch in 2023, the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship is entering its second round. From 6 January 2025, architects in the post-graduate phase can once again apply for the one-year residency scholarship in Cologne. With monthly funding of 2,500 euros, free accommodation and individual support, the scholarship offers ideal conditions for the development of innovative projects at the interface of architecture and urban planning. The application deadline is 31 May 2025.

The scholarship is under the patronage of Cologne's Lord Mayor Henriette Reker and honours the life's work of renowned Cologne architect Gottfried Böhm. With his unique combination of urban planning and architectural elements, he not only shaped the cityscape of Cologne, but also influenced building culture worldwide.

Successful start with global interest

The first round of the 2023 scholarship attracted 41 applications from 23 countries, including France, Italy, Algeria, Iran and Lebanon. The international response is expected to increase further for the second round.
The Italian Dr Ermelinda Di Chiara, scholarship holder of the first round, impressed the jury with her project ‘Developing empty spaces for a sustainable city’, which presented innovative approaches to the use of urban open spaces. ‘The scholarship gave me the opportunity to realise my visions in a unique environment. I was able to experiment, reflect and develop new approaches to urban development together with experts. This experience not only enriched me professionally, but also personally,’ reports di Chiara.

Promoting creative and sustainable projects

The one-year residency scholarship offers comprehensive support for working on creative and visionary projects:

  • Monthly funding of 2,500 euros
  • Free accommodation in Cologne
  • A workplace in a creative environment
  • Individualised professional support from renowned tutors

‘Our aim is to support young talents who are working on innovative and sustainable solutions to urban challenges. My father would have appreciated seeing his vision being carried on by the next generation,’ says Prof Paul Böhm.
