My year with the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship: A Unique Opportunity for Architects

Dr. Ermelinda Di Chiara talks about her year with the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship.

A scholarship that opens doors

Almost a year ago, after finishing my doctoral thesis at the Sapienza University of Rome, I came across the Gottfried Böhm Scholarship. The program immediately caught my attention because it supports architects in the postgraduate phase who are particularly interested in the intersection between architecture and urban development. This connection has always been a central focus of my education and research, making the scholarship the perfect opportunity to deepen my knowledge in Cologne.

Inspiring mentors and good collaboration

One of the most enriching experiences was being mentored by renowned experts, including Prof. Paul Böhm and Prof. Carola Wiese from TH Köln. Their insights and constructive feedback helped me develop new perspectives and innovative approaches for my urban development project. In addition, the close cooperation with the organizing office of the scholarship proved to be invaluable. They not only organized the course of the scholarship, but also integrated me into various events and supported my project.

A unique workplace in the heart of Cologne

Working at the Findeisen Foundation, located in the center of Cologne, was another highlight. The foundation, which regularly hosts art, architecture, and photography exhibitions, provided not only an inspiring workspace, but also the opportunity to connect with people who share my passion for architecture.

Living and working in Cologne

Cologne proved to be an incredibly livable and lovable city. The many green spaces, such as the green belt and the Rhine promenade, offered relaxing places to spend time. The numerous cultural events I attended allowed me to expand my network and gain new insights. Especially valuable was the central location of my accommodation, which allowed me to fully experience city life. The apartment provided by the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Technischen Hochschule Köln e.V. (Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences) was not only comfortable, but also fully equipped.

An experience beyond expectations

I feel very honored to be the first Gottfried Böhm scholarship holder. The Gottfried Böhm scholarship has exceeded all my expectations. It has opened new horizons for me, both professionally and personally. I highly recommend future applicants to take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of the experience. Cologne is a city with a lot to offer, and the scholarship is an opportunity not to be missed.

I would like to thank all partners and sponsors who have made this scholarship possible.
